Our inaugural alpha product design program AUXILIARY X saw nine designers execute 18 high quality and high resolution projects for two very happy clients.
After kicking off in February 2015, designers launched immediately into 4 Pines Brewing Company’s Vostok Space Beer Project – a collaboration between 4 Pines and Saber Astronautics – with the goal to send the first commercially viable and drinkable beer into space. With a timeline of only three weeks, our designers met the challenge to create bottle concepts that would not only adhere to strict NASA regulations but also match the 4 Pines brand ethos. A tough ask for even an experienced industrial designer. Analogue conceptualisation flowed into to lo-fi foam prototyping and parametric modelling, with pristine renderings and 3-D printed prototypes presented to the client. The results spoke for themselves; Angelina Kwan’s Dark Side of the Moon bottle design was selected by 4 Pines and Saber for further commercial development. Next stop, space!
No rest for the wicked, the team segued into work for our primary sponsor Sunbeam Australia to deliver both near and long term concept designs for a broad range of product categories. Putting theory to practice, designers simultaneously learned and applied their insight to translate strategy, differentiate and refine concepts, as well as DfMA and advanced parametric modelling development. A healthy dose of analogue conceptualisation and lo-fi prototyping gave way to proof-of-principle models. This resulted in a dynamic and new-to-world concepts emerging and Sunbeam Australia Design Director Peter Cooper and Innovation Manager Chris Elliott stopped by from Sydney for concept critiques. The 112+ contact hours and countless more outside of studio time went by in a creative blur.
Our program culminated in an exhibition unveiling in May 2015 to over 200 members of the design community and public, where designers of our aptly named Alpha Class presented themselves and their work to the world. Concepts by designers Raymond Dunlop, Angelina Kwan and Rohan McEvoy were taken under embargo by Sunbeam for further commercial development, the best possible outcome for AUXILIARY’s educational consultancy goals.
Since our inaugural program’s completion, three of our designers have gone on to high-profile internships both locally and abroad.
